or he'll instantly refuse it
so she carefully edges her way
toward
breaking his heart

"I don't feel that way,"
he says
watching her to see if she crumbles
under disregard and scorn
"I need to be free,"
he says
dancing back, avoiding the issues
follow? stay? her hopes are torn
"I am not like you,"
he says
and the words are just a cover
to ensure she won't discover
that the love she hoped he'd give her
is quite real, but still denied her
